I'm not sure how this shows anything awkward. Mitt says that he personally does not support or encourage anyone to committ abortions. He explains that the church is against abortion but that one tenant of the Mormon faith is allowing others the freedom to choose. Therefore, it is possible to be "pro-choice" in that you allow others to make their own choice legally or to be "pro-life" in that you personally would not abort or encourage others to. Being pro-choice is not grounds for communication. Having an abortion may be. He gave the example of alcohol.
A Mormon may be prohibited from certain aspects of church participation if they drink alcohol. That being said, the Mormon faith would take away anyone else's choice to drink or not. How is that awkward?

Wanting to clarify my last statement. I wrote, "That being said, the Mormon faith would take away anyone else's choice to drink or not." I was typing fast. What I meant to say was, "That being said, the Mormon faith would NOT take away anyone else's choice to drink or not"
